How we turned a mountain of Halloween candy into a little magic, a few math lessons, and a whole lot of joy.
There's a witch who visits our house every Halloween.
But she doesn't come to scare the children.
She comes to make a trade.
And somehow, she's become one of the most anticipated parts of Halloween in our home.
Let me explain.
First, you should know something about me...
I LOVE Halloween.
Always have.
The costumes. The creativity. The opportunity to become someone (or something!) completely different for a night.
I've been dressing up for Halloween for as long as I can remember, and honestly, I never really stopped. I even became a professional face painter, so you could say that transforming people into magical creatures, wild animals, and fantastical characters is kind of my thing.
Our living room has a giant tickle trunk overflowing with costumes, and our girls are constantly pulling things out, becoming princesses, dragons, fairies, and whatever else their imaginations dream up.
So naturally, Halloween is a pretty big deal around here.
And I want my girls to experience all of it.
The excitement of getting dressed up. The anticipation of going door to door. The joy of filling their little bags with treasures. The memories made with cousins, grandparents, and friends.
Because I remember that magic from my own childhood.
But there's one part of Halloween I've always struggled with.
The candy.
The Halloween candy dilemma
I remember being a kid and feeling like I'd hit the jackpot when I came home with a pillowcase full of candy.
And let's be real, there's something incredibly satisfying about dumping that giant pile onto the floor and admiring your hard-earned collection.
But as a parent, I've become much more conscious of what we're putting into our bodies.
The artificial colours, the additives, the sheer quantity of sugar.
It just doesn't sit well with me.
And yet, I don't want my children to feel like they have to miss out on something wonderful simply because we choose to live a little differently.
I don't want Halloween to become a battle over candy.
I want it to be magical.
So we found our own way.
Enter... the Switch Witch.
A little Halloween magic, with a twist
Here's how it works in our family.
The girls go trick-or-treating just like everyone else.
They dress up, visit houses, collect their candy, and come home absolutely thrilled with their haul.
But the real fun doesn't end there.
The next day, we dump out all that candy and turn our living room into a little Halloween marketplace.
And because we're a homeschooling family, you better believe there's a learning opportunity hiding in there somewhere!
We sort.
We count.
We categorize.
We compare.
How many chocolate bars did you get? How many suckers? Who has more? Who has less?
If you have two little candies, is that a fair trade for one big one?
If you collected 48 candies and ate two every day, how many days would your stash last?
Suddenly, this mountain of candy becomes a pretty fantastic hands-on math lesson.
And the girls are completely engaged because, well... it's THEIR candy.
This year, we're experimenting with something new
One thing I love about homeschooling is that learning doesn't have to happen at a desk.
It happens everywhere.
And this year, we're introducing a new concept through our Halloween candy.
Interest. And the magic of delayed gratification.
Here's the experiment.
The girls can choose to enjoy two candies a day from their little stash.
They can eat them right away, save them until after dinner, or spread them throughout the day.
But here's the twist.
If they choose to save one of their daily candies, I'll double it the next day.
Save one? It becomes two.
Save both? They become four.
It's our own little pretend candy bank, where patience earns interest.
Will they eat their candy right away? Will they save it and watch their little candy fortune grow?
I genuinely don't know.
And that's part of the fun.
It's an experiment in choices, patience, and understanding how saving something today can sometimes lead to more tomorrow.
And if it all ends in a hilarious candy negotiation between two little sisters, well, that's a lesson too.
And then... the Switch Witch arrives
Once we've had our fun sorting, counting, trading, and admiring the candy, it's time to make the big decision.
I first go through the collection and remove the treats with ingredients we've chosen to avoid, particularly certain artificial food dyes.
Then each girl gets a small Ziploc bag.
They can fill it with the candies they want to keep.
Their favourites. Their special treasures. Whatever fits in their little bag.
And everything else?
That gets traded to the Switch Witch.
In exchange, she leaves behind a surprise Halloween gift basket.
And let me tell you, the girls get SO excited about this part.
Their baskets might include puzzles, activities, workbooks, little toys, games, healthier treats, or something new to explore.
This year, they even got some fun little surprises that had them playing for hours.
The excitement isn't about how much candy they gave up.
It's about the magic of the exchange.
They get to enjoy trick-or-treating, keep some of their favourite treats, AND wake up to something exciting that will last longer than a sugar rush.
For our family, it's been a pretty wonderful balance.
But my favourite part might actually come afterward...
Over the years, we've found some creative ways to use all that leftover candy.
Sometimes the girls put together little gift bags for people they love.
People who don't get to go trick-or-treating themselves.
Sometimes they share treats with guests who come to visit us here at Secret Sanctuary.
Other times, we save some for baking monster cookies or making treats for a homeschool group bake sale or community event.
And there's something really sweet about watching your children get excited about giving something away.
Something that, just a day earlier, they were racing from house to house to collect.
It opens up conversations about generosity, sharing, and finding joy in making someone else's day.
And those are lessons I value just as much as the math.
It's not about doing Halloween perfectly
I know our approach isn't for everyone.
And that's okay.
I'm not trying to take all the sugar out of childhood or convince anyone that there's only one right way to celebrate.
Our girls still eat candy.
We still indulge.
We still participate in the wonderfully chaotic excitement of Halloween.
We've simply found a way to make the tradition feel more aligned with the values we're trying to live by.
Creativity.
Conscious choices.
Learning through life.
Generosity.
And a little bit of magic.
Because I don't believe living differently has to mean missing out.
Sometimes it just means getting creative enough to find another way.
And that's something we practice in so many areas of our lives here at Secret Sanctuary, from how we raise our children to how we care for the land and build community.
We're constantly experimenting, learning, changing our minds, and figuring out what works for us.
Sometimes our ideas work beautifully.
Sometimes they flop.
But we're always willing to try.
And if a little Halloween witch can help us turn a pillowcase full of candy into a day of learning, laughter, giving, and connection...
Well, I think that's a pretty wonderful kind of magic.
I'd love to know: Does your family have any Halloween traditions that are a little outside the ordinary?
Or have you found your own creative way to balance childhood magic with the values that matter to you?
I'd genuinely love to hear about them. π§‘
