Pigeon Lake Area: Alberta’s Hidden Gem
Local love notes, family favourites, and one unforgettable custom map
Why We Fell in Love With Pigeon Lake
Back in 2021, our family made the move to the Pigeon Lake area—and we were instantly in awe. Nestled just an hour southwest of Edmonton, this place is far more than a lake. It’s a rich, vibrant community wrapped in forest, bursting with local flavour, and full of surprises.
Every season, we stumble upon something new: a cozy little shop, a backyard distillery, a sweet sandy beach, or a kind soul with a passion project. The land itself feels alive—dense tree stands, sparkling lakes, wildflowers, and wildlife. It’s so different from the prairie flatlands I first came to know when I moved to Alberta in 2014.
We’ve fallen completely in love with this community. I have no doubt you will too.
Treat Yourself – Relaxation & Rejuvenation
Tucked right into Secret Sanctuary, this is where deep healing happens. Veona Drennan—our community’s gifted healer—has over 20 years of experience as a Registered Myomassology Practitioner, Reiki Master, and Certified Aromatherapy Practitioner.
Her sessions are truly something else. She works not just on the body, but also on the mind and soul, weaving together massage, energy work, and aromatherapy into a powerful holistic experience. Guests travel from all over Alberta just to see her.
Before you leave, don’t forget to browse her lovingly crafted body care and aromatherapy products in our Marketplace store—each one infused with plant medicine and intention, so your healing doesn’t end when your session does.

Greenhouses & U-Picks
Stepping into Westerose Greenhouse feels like walking into spring. Tasha, the owner, is always welcoming and full of helpful advice. Their newly expanded space is filled with annuals, perennials, veggie starts, succulents, and houseplants—I never leave empty-handed.
They also host charming high tea events, from elegant gatherings for adults to playful themed teas for kids. My girls and I went to their Ladybug Tea this year and had an absolute blast.

Is there anything better than warm sun, red stained fingers, and a bucket full of strawberries? This family-run Spray-free U-pick is where I get the berries for my famous strawberry rhubarb jam. (Okay, maybe infamous—because it disappears fast.) It’s a sweet little outing the whole family loves. Note: you must book entrance tickets online in advance.

Beach Days, Forest Walks & Peaceful Waters
💦 Twin Lake – Our Favourite
If you’re looking for crystal-clear water and forested stillness, Twin Lake is the place. Fed by an underground aquifer, it stays clean and cool all summer—no algae, no motorboats, just peaceful waters and nature all around.
There are two beach areas: a grassy spot with picnic tables near the boat launch, and a smaller sandy beach by the campground. They even offer kayak rentals on-site.
This is our favourite place to swim as a family. It’s quiet, undeveloped, and feels like a secret wilderness retreat—every visit leaves us feeling refreshed and grounded.
📍Twin Lake Campground, County Of Wetaskiwin No. 10, AB
🏖️ Ma-Me-O Beach
For a classic beach day, Ma-Me-O is our go-to. The kids build sandcastles while we soak up the sun, then we finish with a scoop of ice cream from the little hamlet nearby. Heads up: check water advisories late in summer due to algae.
📍 Ma-Me-O Beach, AB
🎣 Battle Lake
Just 7 minutes from us, this lake is perfect for fishing. My father-in-law loves taking his boat out here—it’s peaceful, still, and a great spot to cast a line. But space is limited at the access point, especially on long weekends.
📍 Township Rd 462B, Winfield, AB
🥾 Mount Butte Hike
We’ve been doing this one since our kids were babies. It’s about a 30–45-minute hike to the top, and the view over Battle Lake is worth every step. Bring firewood and enjoy a mountaintop lunch. There are even geocaches hidden along the trail for extra fun!
📍 Battle Lake Trail, Winfield, AB. The entrance and route is found on All Trails app
🌲 Forest Bathing Circuit
Hidden within the forest at Secret Sanctuary is a quiet, winding trail we call the Forest Bathing Circuit—a self-guided experience designed to help you slow down and reconnect with nature.
Along the path, you’ll find gentle prompts to pause, reflect, and tune into the wisdom of the trees. It’s not about distance—it’s about presence.
Open to anyone visiting Secret Sanctuary—whether for a stay, a retreat, or just an afternoon drop-in—you can explore the path freely or request a printed guidebook filled with tree wisdom and grounding practices.

Golf Courses for Every Swing
Our area is a haven for golfers, with several great courses all within a 30-minute drive of Secret Sanctuary. And since golf isn't exactly our forte, we turned to the real experts—our neighbours, who are avid golfers and were more than happy to share their top recommendations.
An 18-hole beauty tucked into rolling hills just off the highway—easy to find and hard to forget. With scenic elevation changes and prairie-meets-forest views, it’s a favourite for both casual and seasoned golfers. Why we love it: It’s well-kept, never too busy, and the owners are incredibly kind. Wednesdays are Ladies Night, and the vibe is friendly and relaxed.
✧ Exclusive Offer: Guests of Secret Sanctuary get 2-for-1 weekday golf passes! Book your tee time and we’ll give you the voucher at check-in.

Markets & Shopping Gems
We love wandering local markets and finding treasures in unexpected places. Whether we’re stocking up for the week or browsing for fun, these spots are always part of our seasonal rhythm.
🛍️ Lakedell Farmers’ Market
Every Friday from 4–7 PM (May to September), this market is buzzing with local energy. You’ll find everything from fresh produce and preserves to handmade art, chocolates, and the best kettle corn around. There’s a playground right beside the vendors, so we can actually shop while the kids play—which feels like magic. Food trucks often pop in too, making this a great way to grab dinner and groceries all at once.

🧺 Mulhurst Bay Farmers’ Market
